According to Wikipedia, "Machine to machine (M2M) refers to technologies that allow both wireless and wired systems to communicate with other devices of the same type. M2M is a broad term as it does not pinpoint specific wireless or wired networking, information and communications technology. This broad term is particularly useful for business executives."
M2M tech in question comes from Jasper and using it Telefonica will provide a real time data access in Model S vehicles. By data access we mean direct connection for the nav system, online music, remote diagnostics, safety info and more.
All this is part ot the new thing called Connected Car – market, which is expected to boom in the next couple of years. According to Telefonica's Connected Car Industry 2013 report, from 10 percent today this market will expand to 90 percent in 2020.
Speaking of tech it's great to have all this stuff on your giant Model S screen. But we'll have to get used to the fact that our cars will be like mobile phones – their location and what we're doing inside will be detected by the various controlling systems. So to keep it all safe we'll need to have an excellent security – a must in our digital existence ;).
